ARTIST LINE-UP

DARYL JAMES

Multi-instrumentalist singer/songwriter, Daryl James fuses soulful blues with the raw Celtic roots of his North Wales homeland. Wielding a wild array of stringed instruments and custom foot percussion, many-a-tall-tale is sparked to life through his captivating live performances.

From his humble beginnings as a factory worker and street busker, Daryl sold everything he owned and purchased his tickets to Australia, armed with little more than a guitar and the clothes on his back. 2 EP's and a critically acclaimed album later, he now has 2 international tours under his belt and has become a festival favourite, performing alongside many top acts such as Glenn Matlock (Sex Pistols), Ash Grunwald, John Buttler and the Beautiful Girls.

JEUNAE ELITA

Jeunae Elita Rogers is a vocalist, and multidisciplinary artist-scholar with a practice that intersects music, deep ecology, more-than-human entanglements, and esotericism. Jeunae is a queerer of musical boundaries and will ease-fully dip between Hildegard-esque melodies, jazz, soul, folk and various world music traditions.

Exploring voice as a vital technology, before and beyond words, and through the use of live affected vocals through a range of electronics and pedals, Jeunae invites audiences into a world of liminality and feeling.

As a passionate voice and music educator, facilitator, and choir leader, Jeunae champions an understanding that all humans are inherently musical, and that singing and music, until quite recently, has always been at the centre of all cultural and social life.

Jeunae has performed nationally and internationally across concert stages, art festivals, and residencies.

Progressive acoustic guitarist, Luke Horsfield, and contemporary vocalist, Madison Levi have come together as Levi & the Horse. This passion project organically formed during the pair's time hidden away in the Sunshine Coast hinterland and has since been gathering traction with audiences in Gympie and surrounds.

Percussive fingerstyle guitar joins with honied vocals in a poetic exploration of the human condition. Undertones of folk and blues riffs are reminiscent of eras past, conjuring up visions in the listener of Joni Mitchell and Tracy Chapman. The pair also draw influence from more recent artists such as Fink, John Butler, Half Moon Run and Laura Marling. Dynamic and expressive, their sound is one that speaks from the heart.

This is music that aspires to drop you into your depths and hold you in your humanness.

WHAT IS VELVET REALM

Velvet Realm creates pop-up events for independent artists and audiences to come together. We find spaces we like and infuse them with our cosy vibe.

We’re committed to showcasing original music and performance artists, collaborating with local food & drinks vendours, creating moments of immersive multi-sensory magic, injecting communities with an opportunity for connection and generating a culture of creative collaboration.

WHY VELVET REALM IS IMPORTANT

Art making and sharing is fodder for the soul. It’s one of the defining features of our humanness. Gathering together to swap stories is how we distill knowledge, pass on wisdom, create shifts in perspective and tie threads together to form the eclectic tapestry that is a community.

Velvet Realm carves out a space for this to happen.

It’s about providing artists a place to lay down their offerings. It’s about creating a little pocket of wonder in the world where people can step out of the mundanity of their day-to-day and into a moment that inspires their curiosity and collaboration.

FROM HUMBLE BEGINNINGS

This project began as a late night couch conversation between three friends who’ve spent their fair share of time both on stages and amongst audiences.

“It’s important to me that the audience is cared for… that the seats are cosy and the food is top tier. So often I go to gigs and, even though I love the artist, I can’t fully immerse myself because I can’t stop thinking about how my left leg has gone numb from sitting awkwardly on the floor,” laughs Luke, one of the founders.

“Yeah… I also love entering into a space that completely absorbs me and invites me into a sense of wonder and playfulness. I crave more of that in my adulthood. Life gets so serious. Bring on the whimsey” says Madison, one of the other founders.

“There needs to be a focus on good live sound too. The performers need to feel totally comfortable because that’s when they give their best. I hate being on stage and not being able to hear myself or in the audience where the sound level is too loud” says Chris, the other founder.

With a bit more back and forth, the conversation began to sprout enthusiasm in the hearts of the three friends and they decided to put their money where their mouths were.

“…What about Velvet Realm?” asked Luke.

An idea perhaps subconsciously spurred by the velvet cushions and curtains adorning the room that he was occupying.

“Yeah… sounds lush” was the unanimous agreement of the other two.

Not long after this, the friends launched their flagship event at the elegant Burringbar Hall, NSW. They have since been conspiring, evolving and growing the concept and are excited to bring the next instalment to Gympie, QLD.
